Design trends. Let's talk about them.

3/11/2013

Let's have a little fun vent session, shall we? Keyword fun. This is not meant to hurt feelings!

I read a ton of blogs, most falling into the design (graphic or interiors), lifestyle, or travel section with most overlapping. It's not unusual to see something become a bit of a trend and get picked up on by nearly every blog and blogger out there. And, really, that's okay. I'm guilty of jumping on some of the trend bandwagons too. Many of them I actually like or, at least, don't have a problem with....

...in the beginning.

But then it just gets done, said, and used so many times that it becomes one of those things that I think: "if I have to see or read that phrase one. more. time..."

Let's go down the list, yes? In no particular order...

The phrase "pop of colour." This is probably the worst offender. I have made a vow to myself never to type that on this blog. There are so many other things that can be said but nearly every blogger insists on writing "pop of colour." Please, I challenge you if you blog to find a way to say it differently.

Chevrons. Or as the un-fancy me calls them, zig-zags (because seriously, what's the difference?!) I actually liked chevrons...in the beginning. But 3-4 years in and I'm majorily over them. If I see another chevron painted wall...or duvet cover...or DIY artwork (and I'm all about DIY people)...

The colour teal. Or turquoise. Seriously, can we just pick another colour for re-painting furniture, walls, mason jars...anything really.

Striped drinking straws. Oh my goodness, striped drinking straws in turquoise. I die. And not in that cute way meaning, I love it. Know that I'm cringing uncontrollably right now. But in all seriousness, yes, they are cute - I'll admit that. But it feels a bit forced to me, you know? And I can't help but picture someone who only shops at J.Crew and wears loafers drinking from them. I know, I'm terrible. And really, have you seen how much they cost? I've never seen a package of striped straws I thought was reasonably priced for something that I'm just gonna toss after one use.

Excessive sneak peeks. *Sigh* If I have to read one more time about the room or project you've just finished or are in the process of finishing but can't share because you're pitching it to magazines/blogzines/big blogs or until you get it professionally photographed or whatever - more than once, that's one time too many. I can only tolerate sneak peek posts for so long (one post to be exact) before I'm over your big reveal...so seriously, just get to it alright. (For the record, there are a handful of bloggers who I can tolerate sneak peek posts from because they always follow up in a timely fashion and it's always worth the wait).

And so I don't look like a total d-bag, here are some things that are super popular (or growing in popularity) that I totally love and can't get enough of. I'm not a total cow you know.

Ethnic textiles and prints. While I am over the ikat print and therfore anything it's printed on, all of the others are still doing it for me. Kilims? Yes. African mudcloth? Yup. Persian rugs? Can't get enough. Moroccan rugs and textiles? Heck yes. Indian block printed textiles and fabric from Rajasthan? Gimme. And my most recent discovery and love? Hmong textiles. Yes, yes, yes. I'll never tire of these. Never ever.

Plants indoors. Specifically succulents but also things like snake plants and fiddle leaf figs. People really seem to be embracing the whole "bring the outdoors in" thing and I'm loving it. Fiddle leaf figs have been showing up in interiors and design mags and blogs steadily for the past while and succulents are starting to follow suit and I. love. it. Obviously. Since I bought a FLF last summer. Followed by a snake plant. And most recently a succulent. And a fern...

The "modern vintage science-y industrial farmhouse" look. I don't know what else to call it but I love it. Key elements to me include: reclaimed wood, dinged up enamel and industrial pieces, salvaged barnyard lights, white subway tile (with dark grout) - I love it all.

Black walls. I couldn't end this list without including black walls - you all know how much I love them. I don't care who you are or what your style is - when in doubt of what to do with that bare wall, paint it black. Case closed.

Okay, I know I'm not the only one with likes and dislikes when it comes to design. What trends are you totally over and which do you still love? Have you brought any of the trends you love into your own home yet?

  1. I'm 100% in agreement on the chevron trend, it was just too much everywhere that eventually it was done to death. Glad I never ended up jumping on that trend bandwagon. Great list of "enough, already"!

    1. Oh I'm so glad I passed on the chevron trend too!

  2. Haha I love your honesty Kisha. And I have to agree with some of your points. In particular, I also love the "modern vintage science-y industrial farmhouse" look. It is so timeless AND timely, and mostly I love it because (really) a blog or an article in a magazine can never tell you how to really pull it off.

Also, Hmong textiles! Hell yes, please.

    1. It's such a hard look to define but I see some consistent materials used...i'm hoping to infuse my next space with a bit of this look!

  3. I agree with it all!

The first trend I thought of that annoyed me was the "make your own artwork" by framing patterned craft paper. I know art is subjective and it is not super serious to a lot of people like it is to me, but framing craft paper is not art. So yea, i'm an art snob...

    1. Framed craft paper???? Shut. Up. I haven't seen that one!

  4. LOL ... there are so many things.

I'm guilty of "pop of colo(u)r" and I used it again just the other day because it was part of some design advice I got from a web design/graphics company about my photography website. I think it has it's place, but I need to be careful not to overuse it.

    Things I'm over:
Ombre. I've seen ombre everything (including Christmas trees, cakes, staircases, ...) and at this point I'm just sort of done with it.
Dip dying. I also don't get the concept of dip dying/painting the legs of things. It looks silly to me.
Milk paint. I actually like milk paint, but good lord, it's on every design blog like it was the next best thing to peanut butter meets sliced bread. Not everything needs to be painted with milk paint.
Mason jars. I really can't say anything else except that I'm over them.

There. I got my curmudgeon out for a Monday morning. :)

    1. Kara!!! How could you?!?! Just say "no" to pop of colour! ;-)

I could probably add ombre to my over list too. Except for ombre nails..actually, ombre nails done good. Anna at Door Sixteen shared a pic of her a little while ago and they were seriously swoon worthy!

Funny, I was going to add mason jars to my list too...but there are still some times when I'm okay with them. I'd say I'm on the fence with that one!

    2. I know. Bad bad blogger! :)

I actually use mason jars everywhere at home - particularly for pantry storage in combination with a vacuum sealer. But as decor items, making lamps out of them, etc...? I thought it was cute until everyone was doing it!!

  5. Antlers and animal heads. I can't decide whether I still love or hate.:) Leaning toward the latter.
I agree w the above poster about the drinking out of mason jars but on the other hand, I can't get enough of Weck jars which are now showing up everywhere including for sale at West Elm.
I'm also over that blogger that *ahem* paints colour swatches on canvas - and sells them for $100 a pop. But apparently I'm the only one because she keeps selling tons of them and they turn up everywhere. And I'm over all those NY bloggers who wear $400 sweatshirts by Isabel Marant and can afford to buy them and still pay their $4000 a month rents in Chelsea while blogging for a living when they aren't freelance writing and styling. Oops, that had nothing to do with decor trends, did it? Oh well.

    1. Animal heads...or taxidermy - I'm totally over. Antlers is one I'm on the fence with...depends on the space - in some, they work..in others - it looks kinda forced. Just depends really.

I, personally, could never spend $400 on a sweatshirt but to each their own! I don't think it's just a NYC thing though...could just be anyone who's really into fashion. I guess I'm not into it that much!

  6. I totally feel you on the chevron! I'd have to also add terrariums to my list. Seriously seen one too many of those.

    1. Terrariums is one I debated over...it ended up being on my "on the fence list" so I didn't include it. But yes, chevrons...oh gosh they just need to go away. Far, far, away.

  7. Ooh .. I like terrariums. I was thinking of putting one on my desk at work. I think it would be less work and upkeep than a regular plant and still give me something green and living at work. But I can see that they are on every blog all the time lately and it would be easy to get tired of them.

Kind of like milk paint! ;)
