▲ I did not want a Persian rug or anything too patterned (I love my existing rug and don't want anything that competes with it)
▲ I did not want a rectangular rug (I thought two rectangular rugs in such close proximity might be too...much rectangles/angles...especially when I considered that the dining table is rectangular and the artwork that I'll eventually get up and the door/window frame...)
▲ I'm not particularly crazy about round rugs so that wasn't really an option
▲ I wanted something dark for two reasons: (1) to tie-in with the door and help inject a dark colour on that side of the space (the living room area has a dark console table, dark tv, chocolate brown in the Persian rug.....) and (2) to add some separation between the light floors and lighter table.
So after considering the above I thought a cowhide might be the right option. I like that the shape is organic and fluid (not round or angular) and that I could choose from a variety of colours to get something just right. So, when IKEA had their recent 20% of all rugs sale...which they never have...I knew exactly what I was looking for.
What do you think? I love it. It does exactly what I wanted it to. In addition, I love that it's not the traditional black & white spotted combination; I didn't want it to look too much like a cow. I know I know, weird since it's a cowhide. I love that the hair is really short and lays flat (I saw some that looked like you could braid the hair it was so long!). I love that in some parts it's so flat it looks like leather. I love that it's not black...it's dark dark brown. So it matches really well with the dark brown in the Persian rug. My only gripe? I was originally looking for something with a bit more white/cream...and perhaps little flecks. One like that wasn't available so after about 30 minutes I decided on this one with the plan being to test it out in the space for general size, colour, shape....and then keep my eyes opened and exchange it (within the allotted time) if I saw one with more white and flecks. But, of course, this particular one has grown on me.
So, what do you think? Thumbs up or thumbs down? (don't worry, you can be honest!) Was a cowhide the right move or should I have gone with something else? Should I keep this particular one or keep my eyes peeled for one with a bit more white/cream?
Still lots to do in the dining area: change the blinds at the window, get a proper pot for the fiddle leaf fig, hang the photographs that are currently leaning against the wall, get the textile I brought back from India that's currently hung on the wall to the left properly framed and lower it about 2 inches, shine the floor, find 2-4 more of the same chairs, change the light fixture...and I think that's it.
